Common Sense Is Our Way Of Being Natural In What We Do

Is there anything quite like common sense?

Doing the natural and simple thing, almost without thinking. Following your instincts?

In life with experience we can just get on with things. Little thought appears to take place, yet actions are made and tasks accomplished.

We can go against our inner feelings - but perhaps at our peril. We perhaps rely too much upon the outer world as a guide to what to do, think and how to act.

Yet we have inner strength, knowledge and wisdom that often goes untapped or realized. What we should be doing is to tap into this more often. Is this not what trusting yourself is all about?

You may say that you don't have anything common with the people around you, let alone any common sense. But when we say it is common do we mean that we all have it or do we mean that it is similar in all of us?

Or do we mean that within us is a common thread? An inner feeling and instinct. Something that we can learn to rely upon. Perhaps a source of knowledge and wisdom that seems to transcend thought and reason.

Because within there seems to be something that can guide us through even complex situations, if we give it a chance. Yet how do we develop this extra sense? We don't seem to learn it like reading a book or attending a class. We seem to increase it behind the scenes, hidden away from our externally orientated lives.

Through experience, through actions both good and bad, both successful and those found wanting, we have a wealth of 'evidence' about life. This somehow gets internalized, seemingly without our intervention. And over time grows and grows.

And there it sits waiting to be used. Waiting to be trusted. Waiting to be tested.

But there are things that we can question and think about -

  • Can your instincts lead you astray
  • When do we analyze and assess
  • When do we use our gut feelings
  • Are there any misgivings
  • What are the benefits and the deficits
  • How does our common sense grow
  • How common is it

Subject matter close to our heart. And fundamentally and generally so useful. Amazing.

Do we all have it? How can we cultivate it? Is it just a practicality about how we deal with life's situations, or is it so much more?

Is it prudence? Is it just sound judgment and level-headedness?

Why does it come in so handy or . . . And gets so little praise or recognition . . .

Do we just have to have faith in ourselves and let things happen. Let go a bit. Surrender if you like.

And let life happen for us.
